Terraria has had its final update. “Journey’s End”, it was called. The grand finale to more than a decade-long passion project that culminated in one of the most beloved games of all time. That was about 4 years ago. It then had its second final update. Then a third, a fourth and a fifth, all of which were “the last” update. Now, the sixth final update is almost here. After a year of delays, Terraria 1.4.5 is just around the corner, or so we hope. This time, they say, it’s the last update. We’ll see about that. As more details are drip fed to the community, let’s take a look at everything we know about this update.

The Final Updates

In 2020, the update titled “Journey’s End”, which was version 1.4.0, came out. This was meant by the developers to be the “Final Update”. It added tons of new content, polish, and fixes. It was a celebration of everything the game had accomplished over the last decade. Very shortly after this, the devs released 1.4.1, or “Rounding Out the Journey”, sometimes referred to as “Journey’s Actual End”. 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 added Steam Workshop support, Steamdeck optimization, and a Don’t Starve crossover. Then 1.4.4 was another massive content update titled “Labor of Love”, named after the Steam award the game won the year prior. Each one of these, the devs thought, was the final update. However after 1.4.1, they stopped using that term as it always seemed to be wrong.

While 1.4.5 was going to be another final update, the devs have also been talking about a crossplay update, which will let console, PC, and mobile players play together. That was originally slated for 2023, just like 1.4.5. It is unknown if this will make it into 1.4.5 or not, but it’s looking like it might be coming in a 1.4.6 update.

How many more updates will the game get? If the past is anything to go by, they won’t stop any time soon.

The Delays

1.4.5 was originally slated to be released in 2023, but was delayed several times. The last estimate by Re-Logic, the developers of Terraria, placed the update at some point in 2024. As this year draws to a close, and with no further estimates given, hope is rising that the update will be out before the end of the year.

The update was originally meant to be a Dead Cells crossover, but has since grown in scope by quite a lot to include everything from a plethora of new items to game-changing player-vampirism. Taking all of this extra content into account, it is no surprise that 1.4.5 has been delayed this long.

The Main Course

The main thing players are looking forward to in 1.4.5 is the Dead Cells crossover content. Dead Cells, a roguelike metroidvania indie title, has a similar pixel art style and strong community focus to Terraria, and is a great choice for a crossover. Before the scope creep, this update was supposed to be dedicated to only Dead Cells content.

Some of the content in this crossover includes some cosmetic items such as an outfit of the Beheaded, the protagonist of Dead cells, and hanging flasks that can display items the player has collected. There are more non-cosmetic items however, like a warhammer called The Flint, a ranged playing-card weapon called The Killing Deck, a staff that summons little mushroom friends to attack your enemies, a Barnacle sentry which shoots enemies nearby, and a health fountain that can be activated by the player for a buff.

One set of items that we don’t know much about is runes. For example, the Ram Rune in Dead cells lets you smash through certain floors. It is a permanent buff. However, in Terraria, almost everything is destructible already. Will the rune let you do a ground pound and break through blocks? Or maybe a forward charge? Will it be permanent or an equippable item? There’s no telling now, but personally I would love a destructive ground pound. There are several other runes hinted at in screenshots as well, so the range of abilities and buffs we could get is quite large.

That’s all we know so far, but I’m betting there will be even more Dead Cells content that hasn’t been leaked yet.

Other New Content

While the Dead Cells content was the initial inspiration for this update, it no longer comprises a majority of the new content. There is a whole lot in this update, so I will quickly list the most important.

Several whips will be added including a Moon Lord whip, a stardust whip, a corruption whip named Soulscourge, a Duke Fishron whip, a meteorite whip named Starcrash, a plantera whip that shoots homing projectiles, and an additional nondescript white whip. This is a welcome addition, as whips are one of the most under-represented weapon categories. Summoners in particular will benefit from these new whips, as whips aggro minions to the enemies they hit, and get a damage bonus from minion damage.

Some furniture and decorations are on the list as well, including a hallowed armor furniture set, an aetherium set, and a fallen star set in addition to some fallen star bricks and walls.

One notable addition is music blocks that play notes, similar to those in Minecraft or Stardew valley, but the big difference here is that the sounds they play may need to be discovered in the world first. I am a huge fan of this idea, as it not only rewards exploration, but also makes the music feel like something you earned, rather than an optional piece of side content that you can craft all at once at some point.

Several boulder-related pieces of content will be added as well, which is rather odd but I’m not complaining. We have an anti-gravity boulder that falls up, a thunderstorm that rains boulders instead of raindrops, a strange rainbow boulder that may divulge the location of loot in the world, and a… poo boulder.

One of the most interesting updates is a secret seed that will turn the player into a vampire and have the player spawn underground. As a vampire, the player will burn in the sunlight. This will offer a very unique challenge, as you’ll have to tackle the objectives of the game while also avoiding sunlight and possibly other anti-vampire threats. In addition to becoming a vampire, players can also get a bat transformation mount, which is very cool. Not much more is known about this, but I’m hoping it will let even seasoned players experience the game from a fresh perspective.

Another big addition is the “secret seed” selection menu. Secret seeds are world seeds entered when you create the world that enable special features or themed worlds. With the new menu, you will be able to combine multiple secret seeds to enable several of these features or themes in a single world with a nice UI to help you easily add and remove options from the seed.

Speaking of seeds, there is a new secret seed coming that spawns you on a floating island in an otherwise completely empty world. Similar to the popular Minecraft skyblock play style, you will have to make use of the limited resources on the floating island to progress through the game.

Those are the most notable content additions in my opinion, but there are so many more that this article would be 20 pages long if I explained them all. If you want to see all of the rumored changes, check out the wiki article here.

And if you want to spin up a Terraria server for you and your friends in time for this update, you can do so right here. Heck, I will be starting one up even before the update drops so I can get re-acclimated with the game after a several year break, and experience a couple of the updates that I missed.
